Native Americans (American Indians) face various challenges in gaining access to a good college education. Due to extreme poverty and very limited access to educational resources, education is hard to come by for the American Indian community. Even with the passion and desire to get into college, a lot of Native American students find themselves in a hard position. They do not have the financial ability to pay for their education. Luckily, there are a lot of Native American scholarships being offered to those students who are fully motivated to beat all the odds and earn a degree.
Recently, there have been a growing number of Native American scholarships available, which brings the college enrollment rate of Native Americans right above the national average. Those who are citizens of the United States on the other hand, are required to have at least 1/4th Native American blood to qualify for federal grants.
The U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs is one of the best places to look for Native American scholarships. They offer a large number of college aid programs. The Indian Health Service is also offering scholarships. There are two other institutions that offer scholarships for Native Americans who are aspiring to finish college education; the American Indian College Fund and the American Indian Consortium. They help in sourcing out college scholarships and can refer you to scholarship programs in your locality.
There are possibly thousands of Native Americans who are also interested in acquiring scholarships for college education. Winning out on a scholarship is not a walk in the park. You have to want it more than the other guy. The window of opportunity doesn’t close just because you can’t get Native American scholarships. There are a lot of scholarships intended for minority group students. As a Native American, you are automatically eligible for this scholarship.
